Another major recreational trump card in the West Kootenay region is the northern section of the Columbia River. The Columbia originates from two lakes at the base of the Canadian Rockies and flows more than 1200 miles, draining a 259,000-square-mile basin that meanders through seven states (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Wyoming, and Utah) before emptying into the Pacific Ocean at Astoria, Oregon, and Ilwaco, Washington.
